Established in 1973 Rick Mather Architects built a reputation for delivering high quality, innovative, award-winning projects encompassing architecture, masterplanning and urban design. Completed work is recognised for innovation and expertise in the intelligent re-interpretation of existing, often listed structures and in sustainable, low energy buildings.
Award winning projects include the renovation and extension of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Wallace Collection, the National Maritime Museum in London, ARCO and Sloane Robinson Buildings at Keble College Oxford, Constable Terrace at the University of East Anglia, The Times Newspaper headquarters in London's Docklands, private residences in Hampstead and the Zen restaurants in London, Montreal and Hong Kong.
The Rick Mather David Scrase Foundation supports charitable causes and projects that reflect the interests and sympathies of Rick Mather, the internationally renowned architect, and David Scrase, the respected connoisseur and art curator, who shared a life together.
The Foundation commissioned a book 'The Complete Works of Rick Mather' which has been written by award-winning author Kester Rattenbury and developed by MICA Architects and publishers Lund Humphries.
This is the first comprehensive overview of his work, drawing on Mather’s personal archives, the accounts of colleagues, friends, clients and building users, as well as the remaining built works, to open up new interpretations of architecture which sometimes puzzled the style-driven culture of the times.
The book is due to be published in September 2026 and is available to pre-order here.
The trust have recently supported the Architecture Foundation to kick start a series of annual lectures at London's Barbican Centre focussed on the work of architects who are undertaking pioneering work in the field of sustainability.
The series is named in memory of Rick Mather, who maintained a highly successful practice in London until his death in 2013 and played a significant role in advancing thinking about the environmental performance of buildings.
This short film below describes that contribution, with particular reference to Mather's longstanding involvement in the development of the University of East Anglia and his buildings for Keble College and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The film was directed by Tapio Snellman and written and narrated by Kester Rattenbury, whose book on the architecture of Rick Mather will be published by Lund Humphries in 2025.
