Metropolitan Museum Plaza
Improvements to the Metropolitan Museum of Art Public Realm transformed one of the world’s most visited cultural destinations into a more welcoming, accessible, and people-centred civic environment. Working under primary consultant, landscape architect, OLIN, MICA were part of the winning team for this competition.Located along Fifth Avenue at the museum’s principal entrance, the project re-imagined the relationship between the Museum, Central Park, and the surrounding public realm, strengthening visitor arrival, accessibility, orientation, and public gathering space for millions of annual visitors.
The new public realm design created custom monolithic jumbo asymmetric parasols and monolithic stone benches that flank each end. Designed in collaboration with Spatial Affairs Bureau and Olin, the geometry opens the parasols up to the street, creating a distinct human scale environment and providing a floating, overriding order to the many street vendors and visitors interspersed.
The project also included custom visitor service and security pavilions carefully integrated into the historic and landscape setting of the museum campus and Central Park. The south pavilion was designed as a sculptural object within the tree canopy, with faceted roof planes and twisting geometry responding subtly to the adjacent McKim, Mead & White façade. The north pavilion, clad in bronze with gently angled walls, complements both the monumental museum architecture and surrounding park landscape through restrained detailing and durable materials.
The project demonstrates how collaborative and interdisciplinary design can strengthen institutional identity, improve visitor experience, and extend the role of the museum into the public realm, creating a welcoming and flexible civic destination that supports culture, community, and city life.
